The Differences Between SCADA, EMS and DMS
SCADA, EMS and DMS can coexist in one operational architecture, but they do different jobs. SCADA provides field visibility and supervisory control, EMS supports transmission and generation optimisation, and DMS supports distribution-network analysis and operations.
SCADA: telemetry and supervisory control
SCADA collects measurements, status and alarms from RTUs, PLCs and IEDs and sends authorised operator commands to the field. Real-time data quality, communications state and event sequencing are foundational to safe operation.
EMS: system-level analysis
An EMS can run state estimation, power flow, generation scheduling and security analysis over SCADA data for transmission operations. Its purpose goes beyond display to calculate system state and support decisions.
DMS: distribution operations
A DMS focuses on network topology, outage management, volt/VAR optimisation and distribution power flow. Integration with GIS, OMS, AMI and field-work systems matters as much as model accuracy.
