Industrial Demand Response and Flexibility
Demand response is the temporary reduction or shifting of electricity use in response to grid or market signals. In industrial facilities, flexibility must be defined within the constraints of production lines, inventory, thermal storage and utilities.
Build a flexible-load inventory
Compressors, cooling, pumps, furnaces and charging loads should be classified by interruptibility, shift duration, rebound effect and minimum operating conditions. Technical potential should be separated from the operational flexibility that production teams can use safely.
Baseline and verification
Measuring a flexibility event requires a baseline representing the load expected without activation. A baseline that ignores calendar, weather and production conditions can misstate both savings and delivered performance.
Automation and safe recovery
Activation can be automated with limits, priorities and manual override. Because simultaneous load recovery can create a new peak, a staged return-to-service plan is essential.
