How to Build Energy Baselines and EnPIs under ISO 50001

An energy baseline is the reference condition against which performance is compared, while an EnPI is a metric used to track energy performance. Together they help distinguish operational changes from genuine efficiency improvements.

Identify significant energy uses

Break total consumption down by equipment, line or process to identify high-use areas with improvement potential. The management value of an indicator falls when its measurement boundary, data source and owner are unclear.

Why is normalisation necessary?

Production volume, product mix, operating hours and outdoor temperature can influence energy use. Where material, the baseline should be normalised with an appropriate ratio or statistical model rather than treated as a fixed value.

When should the baseline be adjusted?

Capacity expansions, process changes or revised measurement boundaries can invalidate comparisons. Adjustment rules should be defined in advance, with old and new methods and the rationale retained for auditability.
